New Apprentice Application Process

Plumber and Steamfitter Apprenticeship Program

Mandatory Requirements

  1. Must be at least 18 year of age and possess a valid driver's license.
  2. Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  3. Must have successfully completed a minimum Grade 12 education, including Grade 12 math.

Applicants are required to email supporting documents for proof of age, education and a resume before receiving authorization to write the mechanical aptitude test.

The following documents will be accepted:
  1. Driver's License
  2. High School Transcript that shows Grade 12 Math and OSSD completion.
  3. OR High School Equivalency (GED) Certificate.
  4. OR an ICAS Report.
  5. OR a High School Diploma and a College level math transcript accompanied by a letter from the College stating that the curriculum of the course completed is equivalent to a grade 12 Math credit.

How To Apply?

This year we will open the Plumber and Steamfitter Apprentice intake to a select group of applicants.
Applicants interested in the Plumber and Steamfitter Apprenticeship Program with UA Local 71 should send an email to eric@ualocal71.com with subject line indicating that they wish to register for the in-person Mechanical Aptitude Test and on which date.
Please attach to your email all of the required supporting documentation as outlined in the Mandatory Requirements section above.
Email submissions must be received by not later than May 23rd, 2025. (Please note: Aptitude test Applications received later than May 23rd, 2025 will not be accepted. There will be No Exceptions to this rule.)

Mechanical Aptitude testing will occur on site at the UA Local 71 Ottawa office on the following two days:

  • May 29th, 2025, at 8:00am, at Local 71- 1250 Ages Drive, Ottawa, ON, K1G 5T4
  • July 9th, 2025, at 8:00am, at Local 71- 1250 Ages Drive, Ottawa, ON, K1G 5T4

After You Apply

Only the applicants who best meet the apprenticeship requirements will be contacted to have their Mechanical Aptitude test date confirmed. DO NOT CALL or VISIT THE OFFICE.

Those applicants who have passed the mechanical aptitude test, and have been selected for interviews will be required to attend a mandatory safety training session. After the training session is completed, probationary apprentices will be placed on a list to be dispatched as work becomes available. If you are accepted for an apprenticeship, you will be required to:

  • Serve a 9000-hour apprenticeship.
  • Be punctual and maintain a good attendance record on the job.
  • Provide own transportation to and from job sites.
  • Work under the direction of a Journeyperson on the job site and perform duties.
  • Attend related training classes regularly and maintain an acceptable average in those classes.
  • Training will include three sessions of Trade School (8 weeks each), and also minimum of four mandatory night school courses over the five-year contract.
  • Abide by all rules and regulations of the Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee.

Join the union in either apprenticeship, or if you are already a certified plumber, pipefitter or welder, as a journeyman.
